I am an artist based in the West Highlands of Scotland, my work focuses on printmaking and embroidery. I grew up in Fort William with the mountains and my work brings together a lifelong love for the outdoors with a more recent appreciation for its artistic influences.
The subject of my work is based on solitary journeys, and time spent in solitude. As I am from the Western Highlands of Scotland this has manifested itself with a profound connection to landscape, specifically the mountains and lochs that have dominated my upbringing and have therefore translated directly into my work. In preparation for a new project I spend valuable time alone in a solitary environment. The draw of the North West Highlands has been the main focus of my work recently. During this immersion within my subject I gather valuable knowledge and research that I use to create a portfolio of work. Without distraction I discover a heightened awareness of all my actions, most noticeably my breathing. This awareness of a usually subconscious act, and its changes throughout each emotional state, intrigued me. Connecting this awareness with my love of landscape became the basis of my work for my Degree Show last year. I am hugely influenced by the likes of Robert MacFarlane, Norman Ackroyd and Frances Walker.
Since graduating I continue to seek solitude and I thrive on finding it in unexpected places.
